MAGNIFICAT, MAGNIFICAT

Friday, December 11th, 2009 - 8:00 pm
St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Waukesha

Sunday, December 13th, 2009 - 3:00 pm
St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Oconomowoc

A perfect occasion for your family to piece together the Holidays.  Experience Luke's gospel text set by composers from three different eras. "My Soul Magnifies the Lord" was the profession of Mary upon learning she would bear the Savior. WCU performs Italian Antonio Vivaldi's "Magnificat" (Part 1 Part 2) from the early 1700s; the late 1800s English composer, Charles Stanford's "Magnificat;" and Russian Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Magnificat" movement from his 1915 work, "All-night vigil."

HAYDN’S “CREATION”:

A GIFT TO THE COMMUNITY

Sunday, March 28th, 2010 - 3:00 pm
Shattuck Auditorium, Carroll University, Waukesha

Waukesha Choral Union has been performing Handel’s “Messiah” or Haydn’s “Creation” as a free concert annually for over three decades.  This longstanding tradition is funded by area businesses, foundations, and benefactors as well as through generous donations from patrons.  A silent auction of donated merchandise and services will also be held in conjunction with the concert.

Haydn’s masterwork oratorio, based upon the creation account in the book of Genesis, the book of Psalms, and John Milton’s Paradise Lost, was completed in 1798.  The oratorio has three parts; the first depicts the elements; the second, animals and man; and the third, an earthly paradise.  The soloists play the roles of the Archangels Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael in the first two parts, and Adam and Eve in the third. Here’s where you become a piece of this season’s puzzle. Any singer who wishes to participate is welcome to take part in the weeklong preparation for this annual choral event.

VERDI’S “REQUIEM”

Sunday, May 16, 2010 - 3:00 pm • Oconomowoc Arts Center

Waukesha Choral Union’s biggest collaboration ever!
With Bel Canto Chorus, Milwaukee Choristers and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra

The story of this major work is a puzzle in itself. It begins
with the death of fellow composer, Gioachino Rossini in
1868. Giuseppe Verdi proposed a memorial mass, in
which leading Italian composers would each contribute
one section. The project was poorly organized and was
never performed. Five years later, the Italian writer and
humanist Alessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi had admired
all his adult life and met in 1868, died. Verdi resolved to
complete the work, this time entirely of his own writing. The “Requiem” was first performed the following May in Milan. Verdi himself conducted. In the following year, it was given all over Italy, in Paris, London, Vienna, and even America. The
“Requiem” has become one of Verdi’s most popular compositions.
